► News of the Weird from the Hippo: Fighter jets from France were forced in February to accompany the hijacked Ethiopian Airlines plane commandeered by the co-pilot, who had diverted the plan to Geneva in order to apply for asylum. The Swiss air force would normally have taken over the mission in its own air space, but the incident occurred at 4:30 a.m., and Swiss air force pilots were likely still asleep, as they work only “regular office hours,” beginning at 8 a.m. (French military officials said they are accustomed to covering for Switzerland.)
► Internet Humor: Mark Twain once went to borrow a certain book from a neighbor in Tarry Town. May I borrow a book from you? He asked politely. Yes, you’re more than welcome to it, the neighbor told him. But I must ask you to read it here. You know I make a rule never to let any book go out of my library. Some days later, the neighbor wished to borrow Twain’s machine for cutting grass in the garden. Why, certainly, Twain told him. You’re more than welcome to it. But I must ask you to use it here. You know that I make it a rule never to let it go out of my garden.
